I’ve been on Craigslist job postings and a lot of offers email me saying they will tell me more about their companies but I first have to fill out a credit report. Why is this? And should I do it? It seems so sketchy…

I would only do it if the company is reputable like retail stores ask to do a credit report on you but I wouldn’t just let any joe do a credit report on me. Its their way of seeing if they want to hire you, good credit and credit scores might mean that you are probably an ethical and responsible person.
However if a person is in debt and every job asks them about their credit report, how is that person supposed to get out of debt and build their credit history? Its like a catch 22 and its very unfair. Its none of their business what the state of your finances are.
Many companies are running credit checks these days but I wouldn’t submit that online to anyone for a job interview. If they ask for it, tell them you will come down to the HR office and sign the form in person. I guarantee that will eliminate 9 out of 10 requests you get for it.
