Question by : How do you properly dispute an old credit card account to eliminate it from your credit report?
I know that staying on top of your credit report is essential to establishing a better credit score and that keeping tabs on it and outdated or old delinquent credit card accounts is a step to take. I heard that if you dispute those, they can sometimes be eliminated from your credit report. Is this possible and what is the appropriate or efficient to do this?

The first thing you’d need to do is to check the statute of limitations (SOL) in your state. If an account is still within SOL then it wouldn’t be a wise move to dispute it.As long as something is reporting “accurately” then there would be nothing to dispute. Though many times it doesn’t appear that the CRA’s or data furnishers know, or care, what accuracy is. If something is reporting inaccurately then you have a legal right to dispute that inaccuracy.You should read through the FCRA to learn about credit reporting. You might also do some reading in the Credit Forum on the site I’ve posted in the source box.

The wording doesn’t really matter, just state the reason. If you file too many disputes on one report, the attribute bureau may consider it a frivilous report and treat it as such. I have one negative item on my credit report. How do I dispute this item? I have heard that if you dispute an item and that particular company does not acknowledge it can be removed from the report all together. Is this true, and how do I go about doing this? Are you in the USA? I find it unusual that all the jobs you apply to are running credit check on you. Criminal check, yes. Credit check? Only if you are going to be handling company money or some other similar responsibility. If you are desperate, go flip burgers or deliver pizza.
